I’ve been reading a book lately. It’s a gift I got from my colleagues at Med School. It’s pretty nice. It has two sides (I guess this is the more appropriate term) which ilustrate quotations relative to pessimism respectively optimism, chapters being titled by the subject approached by the quotations. It’s this one right here.
So here I am reading this book, enjoying life’s good and bad, learning from smart things said by both emblematic and anonymus people. Quotations are gathered from throughout the past 2500 years, each of them picturing a sample of what society, people, thought, lived and did. Not far into the textes I suddenly realised that on the same subject, people obsesively repeat the same idea again and again throughout the history. Humanity’s ration hasn’t changed a bit, at least not in the past 25 centuries. Initially I thought I could be wrong, it could just be a coincidence, but after that illumination, I started paying more and more attention to what people said from the oldest quotation to the newest. Guess what? Different people, different ages, same ideas.
I have asked myself a question: if humanity has not changed, at least in the past 25 centuries, how could we call ourselves more civilised than we were for example in The Dark Ages?
People still get tortured, they still kill each other for stupid reasons, there’s still slavery, there’s still ignorance, fashion still has its victims, there have always been people who appreciated art, who respected nature.
Nothing has changed. Wouldn’t you think that we should actually do something than just talk about it?
